The rain has erased the street behind you. A brass key marked 208 waits at reception. The woman behind the desk says she has been expecting you for forty-three years.
You have never used that name. The receptionist wears a tarnished badge reading ELISE MERIDIAN. The reception bell is still moving, although nobody has touched it. Above the elevator, five floor numbers glow—one of them should not exist.
The elevator will reveal more once you accept the key.
Four objects seem familiar. You cannot remember owning any of them.

The corridor opens onto an ocean at dawn. Elise Meridian is waiting by the impossible door. She looks exactly as she did in every decade. She removes her name badge. Beneath it is your own name.
